Los Angeles, CA – Today, National Nurses United, the largest professional union of nurses in United States history, formally endorsed Arturo Carmona’s bid for Congress. NNU was founded in 2009, unifying three of the most active, progressive organizations in the U.S.—and the major voices of unionized nurses—in the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, United American Nurses, and Massachusetts Nurses Association.

With less than three weeks to the April 4th special election for Congressional District 34, Arturo Carmona’s outsider campaign has picked up momentum as he rallies against the political establishment in an attempt to push forward a progressive vision centered around working families, advocating for a single-payer healthcare-for-all system, and taking money out of politics.

Deborah Burger, Co-President of National Nurses United, released the following statement:

“We trust Arturo to be a strong voice for nurses, for Californians, and to forcefully advocate for a progressive agenda in Congress. Nurses know we can count on Arturo to work to fix our healthcare system once and for all. It’s not enough just to oppose the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, we need a genuine alternative that guarantees health care for everyone without the skyrocketing deductibles, co-pays, and other fees that result in denial of care for millions of people.

“In California, we know we can count on Arturo Carmona to work with us in supporting the Healthy California Act, SB 562, that would meet that test, and can be a model for the nation.”

Arturo Carmona, Candidate for Congress CA-34 said:

“It is long overdue for the United States to provide universal healthcare for all by enacting a Medicare-for-all, single-payer system. We need a system organized around the belief that healthcare is a human right and should be accessible to all people.

“It’s an honor to earn the endorsement of National Nurses United, a fearless organization that is leading the fight to ensure healthcare as a right for all Americans. I had the privilege of working closely with NNU/CNA during the Bernie campaign. Their commitment to continuing the political revolution is unwavering and I am proud to work with them to advance the critical healthcare needs of the residents of the 34th Congressional District and people across the country.”
