“To me, the benchmarks for a moral society are how you treat your young and your elderly. We must do all that we can – and then more – to protect Medicare and Social Security. They are the most successful social programs in our nation’s history.”
– Arturo Carmona
It is crucial that we ensure the retirement security of our seniors. All working men and women deserve to know that Social Security and Medicare will be there for them when they retire. Every session, conservatives in Congress take aim at those two programs by proposing privatization schemes. The truth is that federally administered plans such as Medicare provide better services at lower rates than private insurers ever could.
I will not only fight any attempt to hurt seniors but will also work to expand and improve benefits. Together we will:
- Expand Social Security by lifting the cap on taxable income above $250,000. At a time when the senior poverty rate is going up, we have to make sure that every American can retire with dignity and respect.
- Change the way that cost-of-living adjustments are calculated. Social Security increases must fairly reflect the true costs our seniors face in areas such as health care expenses.
- Work to lower prescription drug prices. Like the Department of Veterans Affairs, we must allow Medicare to negotiate with drug companies to secure the lowest price of drugs for our seniors.
- Work to expand Medicare into a nationwide single-payer plan to spread costs across the entire population and thus lower costs and expand services for seniors.
